Temperance Farm was formed in 2021 as a homestead and market garden in Macon County on occupied Cherokee land. We use low-input and no-till practices to build soils and take a holistic approach to land stewardship.
We grow a full range of seasonal produce, including staple foods like sweet potatoes and dent corn, in order to provide nourishment year-round. Our vision is to demonstrate how independence from global food supply chains can be approached in a fair and accessible way in the Southern Appalachians, and to identify the barriers that stand in the way of economic and food security for land-aware working people in Western North Carolina.
We believe that the effects of freely giving care to people, plants and animals alike range far outside of our own sphere of influence. This law of reciprocity leads to healthier soils and forests, higher yields and resilient biotic communities that can support each other with less human assistance. The more caretakers we have for the land, the stronger our regional food systems are, and keeping our community’s business connections local enables further support for the people that steward our natural resources.
